We hope to answer many of your questions on this page. If you're still not sure of an answer, please don't hesitate to get in touch!

Can I buy a share in a horse as a gift?

Absolutely, and what a great gift it would be!

How long does my ownership contract run?

The contract runs from the date the funds clear and are received by Jolly Racing and is for the period stated in the advertisement of our horses.

Is my horse insured?

When you purchase a share, the horse is not insured. If we believe a horse should be insured at a stated value we'll write to the owners. This is normally for pattern race performers.

How many badges am I entitled to with my share?

For every 5% share you'll get one Owners & Trainers badge. For 10% and upwards you'll get two badges. For 25% or more shareholders, you'll get four badges. For 2.5% shareholders, one badge will be available (subject to availability). At many of the big meetings, badges are restricted by the racecourses but we'll do our very best to make sure owners receive their allocation.

How do I get my share of prize money back that my horse wins?

Each shareholder will receive their % share of all earnings on the horse you own a share in, whether leased or bought.

Prize money is calculated when received by Weatherbys (horse racing's bank) at the end of each month. You'll receive the share of the prize money you're entitled to if your horse is placed or wins. For example, if you own a 5% share, you receive 5% of any owners’ prize money won. Gross prize money, includes all prize money distributed between owners, trainers and jockeys. The owner’s percentage is around 78% for a win and then ranges from 83-87% for a place depending on the placed position.

How many owners does each horse have?

The number of owners very much varies from horse to horse.  It may be as low as two and as many as 100 in some instances.

Who decides which jockey rides the horses?

The trainer and racing manager will decide who rides the horses although any suggestions are welcome.

What happens if I want to give up my share? How much notice do I have to give?

You can terminate the contract at any point after the first 12 months. We require one months' notice in writing via email.

Can I sell my share?

Yes you can sell your share at any point. We may be in a position to purchase your share from you, depending on the situation at the time. If you've found an owner for your share, you'll have to send us their details and we'll get everything transferred.

Who decides when and where my horse should run?

We manage the racing plans of all of the horses in conjunction with the trainers of each horse. We'll let you know when your horse has been entered before the race and declared before the race. We'll be in communication on a regular basis.

How are decisions made to sell horses?

We review each horse at the end of the season. Decisions are based on the performance and rating etc of the horse. We aim to achieve maximum value as and when we think the time is right. We require a vote on whether to accept the offer from each member and it has to be a majority decision i.e. over 50% have to vote in favour of the offer being accepted for it to be sold.

Please be aware that the trainer and Jolly Racing are entitled to 5% each from the sell on.

What happens if a third party make an offer to buy a horse I have an ownership share in?

All offers for horses are passed on to the owners. We welcome your opinion in terms of keeping or selling the horse. Many owners aren't experienced enough to know when to accept or reject offers so we can advise. We require a vote on whether to accept the offer from each member and it has to be a majority decision i.e. over 50% have to vote in favour of the offer being accepted for it to be sold.

Please be aware that the trainer and Jolly Racing are entitled to 5% each from the sell on.

What happens to our horses once they retire?

We have many contacts in the retraining of racehorses industry. As horse lovers ourselves, we'll make sure the horses go to a safe home after their racing careers have finished.
